Back to Disquis - Ellie and Pencilnub … don’t kill me

Started by Randy · 10 months ago

Well, Disqus was pretty cool before but I decided to not use it because they had some issues and I didn’t fully understand what they are doing with the comments. I went back to using them today because they can sync all my comments with their servers and my admin interface. LOVE that. ... Continue reading »

  • Randy Thomas....you are the most mind-changing-est person in the world! I will hold off on killing you, though.
  • It's a good thing I am not running for President huh?
  • Yes, you flip-flopper.
  • testing reinstallation of disquis
  • Can you make it so I can edit? Please? ::::looks up pleadingly through eyelashes::::
  • Pretty girls batting their eyelashes can get me to do just about anything ... but I don't know how to do that. The old plugins don't work on the new system. I don't know where but it seems to me that Disqus should allow you to edit them somehow (maybe on your disqus user profile ... maybe?) but I can't find it right now.
  • Well, I'll have to play around with that. Based on a preliminary check, the old Explorer v. Firefox issue that was bothering me before has been resolved. I don't actually use explorer anymore, but I thought you'd like to know.

And I think that I will be okay with using Disqus now (their name still bugs, though; grrr).
  • Great. Good to know about the browsers and good that you ditched explorer. I haven't used it in years.
  • poor microsoft...nobody likes them. Anyway, I'm sitting through a fabulous lecture on Cathedral construction from my favorite professor (whose partner majorly needs to give him art lessons...ah well, I still love him), so I'll leave you for now.

btw, you spelled disqus wrong in this post's title.
  • have fun in class. Thanks for the editing catch.
  • Ok, I'm checking one of the other problems that was bugging me on the old Disqus, and seeing that it is resolved. YAY, Disqus!

It was, if you're wondering, that the reply field hid itself behind the sidebar and so I couldn't read half of every line I wrote. The other problem that I had was that once I wrote more than would fit into the reply field, I could't scroll around, so I had to hope that I didn't need to edit anything. But I can scroll now. YAY again!
  • YAY indeed :)

It also stores all the comments on their system AND my own database. I should never lose them that way :).
  • OK, you're comment feed is really funny right now. There are comments from months ago, and comments from today.

The whole flip-flopping things is sorta cute though...if you don't do it too much :-)
  • I know, the import thing cut off about a third of the way through the import and I can't get it to finish :). That's the ongoing issue that I have reported to Disqus.
  • All right. First: COMMENT EDITING IS BACK!!! YaY!!! Woot!!! YaY!!!! (I am an English major. You do the math :)

Second. I just switched to Google's new Chrome browser to try it out (I am feeling like a highly adventurous, tech savvy English major, now) and I have concluded, once and for all, that the previous issues that I had with Disqus were completely browser related. This is because the Disqus comments look different in Firefox, IE 6 (we're up to 6, right?), and Chrome. So anybody in the future who has problems with the Disqus system should first viewing the blog in another browser, if they want the problem fixed.
  • I was wondering when you were going to comment on the editing being back.

IE is up to 7 something. I am on a Mac so I don't have Chrome. Is it not working right in Chrome?
  • No, it's working right. It just looks different because the fonts come through in bold. Not like illegible, screaming bold, just darker. I actually like it better in Chrome. So far the only thing that bugs me about Chrome is that I can use my touch pad to scroll down, but if I want to scroll up I have to grab the bar w/ my mouse. But that's just a habit I have to change.

I was using firefox which is something of a combo between IE and Safari, and Chrome seems pretty different from those three. I'm tentatively sold.

ETA: You know I just love my editing ;)
  • Yes, you and your editing. That another character attribute that should be put in the plus column.

I look forward to trying out Chrome once they release it for Mac.
  • Another thing, did you disable the comment rating function?
  • Yup... a long time ago. No one was using it and I thought it was ugly. :)
  • I was using it. I was just going to rate Brady's comment to Leo (Leo, right?) 'cause I thought it was good.
  • Oh ...ok. I'll put it back on in a second.
  • There ya' go.
  • Thank you.
  • You are welcome.
