Wow. Who would have thought this would be one of your more controversial threads, Randy? In any case, way to go doing what it takes to defeat spam. Spam is the Jar-Jar Binks of the internet.

PS. Come look at my webcam and get cheap viagra just by leaving two credit card numbers.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
For realz. Yeah I hateses the spamses. BUT this system is new (altogether) so we will see how Disqus is able to stand up to the ongoing Spam War.

    spambots are relentless.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
What exactly is this supposed to do? And what does 'verify' mean? And where'd the 'recent comments' list in the sidebar disappear to?
  • Randy · 1 year ago
Breath Ellie. You are a smart woman in college... I am sure you can figure it out easy enough. :)
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
    I don't think that I am a woman...

In the imperative form 'breathe' is spelled with an 'e' at the end. The word 'breath' is a noun. I am very annoyed with 'disqus' because it would not let me claim my comment, and its faq didn't explain how or why that would be. Also, in English the letter 'q' must make a 'kwu' sound when followed by 'u,' unlike in French and Spanish where the 'u' is ignored in favor of the 'i' or 'e' following it. Why is it that techies feel they are always allowed to change phonetic rules to suit therir personal aesthetic?

Anyway, instead of getting extremely frustrated with disqus and crying and getting your blog all wet, I decided to let out my frustration by correcting your grammar, and created a new profile in which I decided to go back to my usual name (I only post as Ellie here and on the Boundless Line [where there are a couple Ellies]). If you can figure out how it is supposed to work so that I can get Ellie back, I will be happy, but I am not techie enough to figure it out without getting more annoyed. Or else you will have to remeber that BTCarolus is Ellie (or you can call me Brian Titus, if you prefer, but don't call me BTC, please).
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
OK, I artificially 'changed my display name' to Ellie, but I still don't know how to get my previous comment. Also, I guess that I'm SisterofVenice35 on flickr, which is really random, so I'm not BTCarolus everywhere. But mostly everywhere.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
I might go back to BTCarolus, though, when disqus will let me. I like it better, even without my accustomed periods. It *was* nice of Daniel to come here to clarify things, I will say, because I think I've been overly critical. Now I am going to go do my reading, because I have commented way too many times on this post.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
I had a feeling there was more to the story.

If it helps you to make the transition to Disqus ... correct my grammar until all the frustration just flows out.

I am sure I will give you plenty of opportunity.

    I don't think that I am a woman...

Then what do you think of yourself?
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
I think that I'm a girl. Actually, I would say that I know I'm a girl. It's nice to have certainty about these things.
  • Randy · 1 year ago

Biologically matured? (insert a lot of sarcasm into that, please). II think that biology can determine whether we are male or female, but how does it determine whether I am a woman or a girl? You're probably not nosy enough to want to know when I started having my period, but it was way younger than the national average. Was I a woman in elementary school? I started taking college courses when I was 14. Was I a woman then? Did I become a woman when I turned 18? Or when I graduated from high school?

I think being a woman is a matter of internal emotional maturity, and it's something that I realize I lack. I have just recently become mature enough to be aware of that (and thank God I was protected from doing some of the stupid things I have been tempted to by the hubris being a teenager in college brought on). When I'm a woman I think I'll be mature enough, and self-aware enough to realize it. But I don't think that I am one right now.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
Yeah,,, I am not that nosy... I wasn't trying to be sarcastic. I think it
is a great question. Same is true from when a boy becomes a man. Perhaps
the better way to put it is that physical maturity doesn't make a boy or
girl emotionally mature enough to be a man or woman. Thanks for your
    honesty.

And for not telling all the details.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
btw, I wasn't saying that you were being sarcastic, I was saying that if I were sitting next to you and talking that you would hear my voice get all sarcastic when I said the preceding phrase.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
oh ok... good. I was hoping that I didn't offend you.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
OK, this might be totally weird, but I just went through some of my old comments (Disqus is super cool because it archives all of them), and I stumbled upon this old conversation. It made me realize that I think I've crossed over into 'womanhood' and no longer see myself as a girl. So you can call me a woman now, Randy.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
Wow... it's seven months later and so much has changed. Good for you.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
Hey Ellie, I just posted a video about this in the original post. It will probably inspire more questions for you but ... it is more information :).
  • Randy · 1 year ago
I also just put a prettier most recent comments thing in the sidebar. You can't miss it.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
It is nicer to have the profile pics, but it is not nicer to have light grey on white (or dark grey on dark blue) because it is very hard to read. Also, when typing up a reply (at least on my laptop) the last few letters of the end of each line get lost at the side of the margin. So if you make a spelling error, you can't see it, and if you wrote a short word such as a preposition and it happened to wind up at the end of the line, you can't see it either. And when typing multi-paragraph comments it won't let me go back to paragraphs that have gone above the editing field that is visible (if that makes sense).

I do kind of think it's a good idea though, once I get used to it.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
Plus if you go up to add something into a previous paragraph and the one you're working on drops below the editing field, you can't go back to it.

I just responded to the disqus email notifier of a follow up comment and it posted here! That is awesome because when I was on the road and only had my blackberry it was a little difficult to navigate through the mobile web browser to get to answer here...and time consuming. Now, I can just answer via email (making note to delete the "quoted text" out of the reply before sending.)

    Very handy feature.

And just changed the widget in the sidebar that inherits the blogs default design...the other was pretty but this is pretty and fits in with the flow.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
And is legible, which is the most important consideration. Is it possible to change the color of the text of the comments as we are typing them? I'm having trouble with the grey on blue still.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
Ellie, I am not sure what you are seeing. On the blog itself, the text input area I see is white with black text. Are you answering at the blog or inside Disqus or via email?

I am not having the same problem as you are having on the blog. I did check out my options but I don't have the geek super powers to redesign the input areas. Sorry.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
I am answering from the blog itself. It's odd because I have had the same problem with two computers. My laptop which is a pc and, like, two months old, and the family pc, which is several years old. They are on the same network so that could be why they are having issues. But I find it interesting that I used a third computer (yes, I visit many computers throughout the day) and I got the white plus black that you're getting. That computer is a mac (with a pc mouse and monitor, which I didn't know was possible, but Cal State LA is just cool like that, or cheap like that, or something. I believe that you are using your beloved mac, )having realized that the social conditioning of pcarchy was causing you to lie to yourself about your true computer preferences) so perhaps it comes through differently on Macs verse pcs? I don't really know enough about building a blog to know whether that is a possibility.

My laptop still has the issue of the comment entry box hiding its end behind the sidebar, making it very hard to type out the ends of lines, and impossible to scroll back to sections that have gone above or below the margins of the box. I think that might be a screensize issue, although my laptop is 14" and still has a good 3 or 4 inches total of black background extending out from either side.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
And illustrating that issue, I was trying to change the last paragraph and must have hit the wrong key (stupid laptop keyboards) because I accidentally scrolled up (wish I could do that purposefully) and couldn't get back down to the paragraph I was trying to edit..

What I was going to change was to say that it's about two inches sticking out from either side, or about 4 inches toatl (don't know whether I spelled total right 'cause I can't see it, and tired of retyping it) of black background. So I don't know if the main body of the blog has no room to expand further, or if my laptop just can't deal with it.

  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
Actually, in directly comparing them I also realized that the bar w/ our names and pics and the timestamp are a wierd white-grey on my laptop and a blue color on his pc. So it must be that explorer doesn't like disqus. This is interesting (can't see what I just typed, sorry if it's spelled wrong) because it is my first time to ever encounter actual issues with interenet explorer. Maybe I'll just have to get firefox.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago

  • Randy · 1 year ago
wonderful. I don't like that it doesn't seem to be working in the other browsers though. But I am looking around and I don't see any others that have any better integration.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
hmm. Very strange. I tried to claim my first comment again, and it didn't work any better, so I guess that wasn't a browser issue. I'm actually curious as to why all this was.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
    why all what was?
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago
Why explorer had so many issues, for one thing. And why disqus won't let me claim my comment for another.

Although I suppose that most people would say the explorer question is answerable in a simple word: Microsoft.
  • B.T.Carolus · 1 year ago

All right, I am now a cool person countering Microsoftarchy by downloading the subversive firefox.

Plus I can read my comments as I type them. I think all the problems are solved :)

wonderful. I don't like that it doesn't seem to be working in the other browsers though. But I am looking around and I don't see any others that have any better integration.

hmm. Very strange. I tried to claim my first comment again, and it didn't work any better, so I guess that wasn't a browser issue. I'm actually curious as to why all this was.

    why all what was?

By the way, I hope that it's not too weird that I am commenting on your blog so much. It's an odd feeling to see yourself cluttering up the sidebar of somebody else's blog.

Why explorer had so many issues, for one thing. And why disqus won't let me claim my comment for another.

Although I suppose that most people would say the explorer question is answerable in a simple word: Microsoft.

Randy Thomas. You did *not* just banish disqus from your blog after all that, did you? Please tell me my computer is just having major issues.

yeah... read the newest post. I am not cool with duplicating my blog for the search engines and whatnot. Plus, I didn't bother you with all the behind the scenes research that was continually making me nervous.
I am not just saying that either.

Wow... it's seven months later and so much has changed. Good for you.
