ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected: Does the APA = American Political Association?

I really don't know the answer to this question and perhaps you do: If a person wants to change his or her sex, aren't there psychologists who accept that and try and help the person accomplish that goal?

At the very least, they don't discourage it, do they?

If I'm right, then my next question would be 'why shouldn't someone be able to seek treatment if they don't want to be gay?'

    I'm just asking the question.

What is the APA? Is that just an association or like a union or something? Do they actually control rules for practicing psychologists or just give suggestions?

Maureen, honestly, I think it's because it's just not politically or morally in line with the gay agenda. If you push the issue, they'll probably reluctantly admit that people should have the right to pursue change, but then they really want to make it as hard for people as possible. They just can't stand the fact that we exist.

Maureen, I agree with you. It seems like genetics and free will are liberally given to those who want to surgically alter their gender but for those of us who want to change our sexual orientation... suddenly there are no options for that. It's ridiculous hypocrisy in my opinion and I think it stems from the fact that we want to change due to moral and spiritual reasons.

Em They are an Association and a huge association at that. They do make policy in house on what is acceptable within their own association. You can be "excommunicated" from their association if you are found to not be in alignment with their principles. I am not sure what effect this has on the actual licensing of a Psychologist but it is a black mark in the secular world for a Psychologist to 1)not be a part of the APA and 2) to get booted from it for violating their in-house ethics.

That said, there are a number of Psychologists willingly leaving the APA and the Psychiatric version of the APA because both groups are being eschewed by in house politics and not staying true to their missions.
