ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected: Family Guy Goes Gay to The AFA’s Dismay

  • Mike T. · 9 months ago
Hey Randy... apparently we are both subscribed to AFA's website. I for one don't even really watch TV at all. I knew about Family Guy, but only recently began to learn about how gross and insulting it is. I immediately followed the form and submitted a complain to the FCC. As an individual, I find it appalling that our culture and media find it funny to put this kind of thing on the air. For goodness sake, there are other sources of humor. Family Guy is a sick show. And when it comes to TV, my motto is "Garbage In, Garbage Out". Jesus made the point clear in that it's what's IN a person that gives them 'darkness'.

I just thought I'd also say that I agree with you, Randy... we need to find ways to laugh with others. It's good for our bodies and souls. All you have to do is sit at the dinner table at my house some nights... our kids bring all the humor to the table with them... now THAT's a show!

Someone should remind the AFA that if they don't like a certain show, they can always change the channel.
  • Randy Thomas · 9 months ago
Alex, that one is obvious and kind of boring. Did you have your coffee this morning?
  • Randy Thomas · 9 months ago
I am finding as I get older I watch less hellivision. But ... I still loves me some American Idol and Damages.
And Damages is all about murder, greed, malice, false witness ... so, I guess I need more sanctification ::: grin :::

    Sounds wonderful :)

Common sense is usually obvious and boring.
  • Randy Thomas · 9 months ago
I guess that means you didn't have your coffee.
Also, if you hit reply underneath the comment you are replying too it will help with the comment flow.

I read over the episode and I find it kinda disgusting. That's why I don't watch that show, no not even one episode. Vulgarity turns me off. However, vulgarity of any kind has the same affect on me. There are many vulgar things going on that are not so 'cartoonish'.
  • Alex · 9 months ago
I'm sorry a grown-up reaction isn't more exciting for you, Randy.
  • Randy Thomas · 9 months ago
Very true Murray. Thanks for adding your thoughts.

I've never watched Damages, but if that show glorifies sin as much as you say it does, then why hasn't the AFA protested it? And why do you, a Christian, enjoy watching it?
  • Randy Thomas · 9 months ago
Let me know what they say when you ask them why they are not boycotting Damages.
I like watching it because it has incredible writing, incredible acting (Glenn Close) and a bunchabunch of plot twists. It isn't actually glorifying sin at all ... it's revealing it in these corrupt characters life. I like trying to figure out their personalities, mysteries within the plot and look for any redeeming possibilities.
That doesn't mean I should watch it but I am not feeling the Holy Spirit saying I shouldn't. It isn't hindering my spiritual life whereas other shows do.
You must have finally had some coffee.

"That doesn't mean I should watch it but I am not feeling the Holy Spirit saying I shouldn't. It isn't hindering my spiritual life whereas other shows do."
If someone said to you, "I am not feeling the Holy Spirit saying I shouldn't be in a gay relationship," how would you respond? If it doesn't hinder their spiritual life, does that make it ok?
  • Randy Thomas · 9 months ago
The Bible is full of fascinating stories of corrupt people. I am not inclined to believe that all non-Christian entertainment shows cannot be watched and processed within a Biblical context. Some shows do a great job of exposing human frailty and object lessons in how sin destroys.
When I said I needed more sanctification, I am always going to need more sanctification and in this case, I was being facetious.
Personally embracing a gay identity, investing romantically, adopting an entire relational worldview and having sex with someone is a little different than watching an hour long fictional episode of Damages.
If a person says that they don't feel the Holy Spirit is calling them to leave behind their gay relationship I would have to trust His work in their life to eventually make that clear between He and them ... or believe we aren't listening to the same Spirit. Either way, I will do my best to be a friend.
The Holy Spirit was very clear with me that He had more for me than I would ever find in embracing a gay identity and culture.

I've watched this show for a long time, but this latest season has really turned me off. So many of the latest episodes have just poked fun of Christianity and Christians, and they've pushed so much that homosexuality should be accepted, and that if you're someone who doesn't accept it, then you're just hateful, ignorant, or just downright evil. I saw the episode in question and, yes, it was rather pathetic. It wasn't funny at all. And it certainly was waaaaaay to racey for prime time television.

I haven't watched it and won't watch it. Sounds way too toxic to my mind. Thanks though for the warning.

Hey Brandon. Thank you for your insight. Before this season, if you don't mind my asking, what was it about the show that kept you coming back to watch it "for a long time?"
Is this season going to tune you out? Are you to the point of contacting the FCC?
Those are all open ended questions. I am not going to try and convince you to do anything.
I was a random Family Guy watcher but will probably not watch it again and will contact the FCC.

    You are welcome.

I don't watch Family Guy. In fact, I watch very little hellivsion because there in nothing worthwhile to watch. We have the Angel Network because I do not want my 10 year-old son seeing the garbage on cable. I don't need to see it either. I too signed the FCC petition, but what good will that do. Our nation seems to completely ignore any value that restricts pleasure. I know where the pleasure path leads, and I'm not interested in traveling that road.
I think that as the Lord transforms our hearts that we have less and less of a desire to pursue the world. His ways are so much better.

What drew me to this show was its stupidity factor. I'm a sucker for ridiculously absurd/whimsicle comedy. The show has probably always been edgy, but not so much that it just came across offensive to all involved. What's turned me off the most is the message the show has gradually pushed down the throats of it's viewers, which is that Christianity is stupid, and homosexuality should be accepted and encouraged. The morality of the show has just went down the tubes though. To be honest, it's probably always been a show with R rated material though. I'd never want any children to see any of it. That in itself probably should be a reason to give up watching it.
As for contacting the FCC, I doubt I'll do that. There are soooo many more shows on television these days that are a whole lot worse than this one. If the FCC doesn't see anything wrong with them, I doubt they'll see anything wrong with Family Guy. Not only that, but contacting the FCC won't do anything but draw more attention to the show. As I recall, that's what really boosted ratings for "Married With Children" back in the day. I think the better bet would be just to boycott the show. When viewers drop off, maybe the producers will finally take the hint. That, or the shop will get cancelled again.
  • Randy Thomas · 9 months ago
Of course I totally agree with you Jeff, but I think the more people do get consistently involved (in whatever way they feel is redemptive) the better.
"His ways are so much better." - Amen.
  • Randy Thomas · 9 months ago
Thank you for adding more of your thoughts Brandon. I do think that "not watching" is the most obvious and probably most effective way of dealing with it.
but I am still going to sign the FCC thing :).
    Thanks again for commenting.
