Well, Sedaris does have the reputation, among his critics at least, as being a bit self-absorbed and bitter. Who are the other authors that you 'tend to write like?'

I haven't really read any of Sedaris' critics. Perhaps I should. As for other authors I write like, it's kind of weird but I feel uncomfortable saying. I don't want to appear self-absorbed :).

I would like to write, in a redemptive way, like Sedaris, Palahniuk, Roth and Toni Morrison. I also like Max Lucado and Erma Bombeck :).

I love telling stories. I know each of the above authors can be very different but ... I don't understand it either.

I am no where near ready or as good, but I love the way the above authors think out of the box.

Have you ever read E.M. Forster? You might like his 'Howards End,' which experiments with narrative structure and characterization without falling into too much pessimism.
