I think it has a lot to do with Lordship and giving up control. Here's my facebook note on the topic:

Bless you Matt.
I was pondering salvation after reading and commenting this morning. I was thinking what a miracle it is that any of us can be saved, especially me.

"Narrow is the way, and few there be that find it." -- I'm so glad God put all these challenging, scary verses in the Bible. They allow me to "work out my salvation with fear and trembling."
Yes, the exciting part is the 'glimpses of truth, Thou hast for me.' And yes, I desire to hear Him say, "Well done, my good and faithful son/ servant, enter into your rest." ...
Getting back to the first sentence, here, I need to follow up on that... asking Him to keep bringing it up until I know it's from Him... Love it.
Blessings!

Just a thought, for some the blessing of liberty that comes with salvation scares them. The *rules* seem too loose...not rigid enough. So, the comfort for them is legalism and rigid adherence to *rules* rather than a loving relationship with Him who is our LIFE! Really, His life frees us completely and for me the call is to abide and rest more in Him, not *do* more for Him. Faugh. He doesn't need me to do anything *for* Him! He blesses me when He uses me for His purpose, but believe you me, it's Him...not me. I'm merely the tool in the Master's hands.
Perhaps it's what John Piper talks about when he refers to asking the Lord to keep him saved everyday? I've listened to pastor Piper long enough to know that he doesn't believe you can lose your salvation.
But I agree with you. I could not speak to anyone else's position of salvation with the Lord. I do know of many in the church who have no idea God speaks to them. Many of us grew up learning to be afraid of hearing anything just in case it wasn't God.
I don't believe one can lose their salvation but the possibility of claiming to be saved and not is played out quite clearly on Judgment Day as described in Revelation.
On one hand I wish I was raised in the church because it might have staved off a lot of harm that I got involved in. On the other hand I am glad that I don't have the confusion that some have had on being raised Christian but not having a saving knowledge of Christ.
That's why in the end, the atonement is equally applied to all. We all have or shortcomings and consequences that need the Lord to cleanse and steward.
