ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected: iPhone Blogging, Cultural Christianity and Jesus

I can identify with this. I grew up going to church and made a decision for Jesus at a young age but didn't actually meet him until I was 16, and that's when he started to go to work on me.

I think it has a lot to do with Lordship and giving up control. Here's my facebook note on the topic:

I'd be interested in reading it as well.

Cool Thank you for sharing that Matt. It's an amazing, and sad, phenomenon to me. I am glad when people "get it" no matter how they get there though.

    Bless you Matt.

    Totally!

I was pondering salvation after reading and commenting this morning. I was thinking what a miracle it is that any of us can be saved, especially me.

"I ask God to speak to me and then keep bringing it up until I actually take notice and know it is from Him."
    --LOVE THIS!

"Narrow is the way, and few there be that find it." -- I'm so glad God put all these challenging, scary verses in the Bible. They allow me to "work out my salvation with fear and trembling."

Yes, the exciting part is the 'glimpses of truth, Thou hast for me.' And yes, I desire to hear Him say, "Well done, my good and faithful son/ servant, enter into your rest." ...

Getting back to the first sentence, here, I need to follow up on that... asking Him to keep bringing it up until I know it's from Him... Love it.

    Blessings!

Yep and He is faithful to do it. He's a good Shepherd. I love it when He brings you the exact same scripture four times in a day from very different sources. It made me laugh ... I am like, "OK ! I get it :)."

Well, watch out for the size 43ZZZZ that'll be headed your way if you're a little slow on the uptake. He does have a way of getting our attention! Me, my prayer is not to miss His voice...the 43ZZZZ packs a wallop (I can all too readily affirm!).

Just a thought, for some the blessing of liberty that comes with salvation scares them. The *rules* seem too loose...not rigid enough. So, the comfort for them is legalism and rigid adherence to *rules* rather than a loving relationship with Him who is our LIFE! Really, His life frees us completely and for me the call is to abide and rest more in Him, not *do* more for Him. Faugh. He doesn't need me to do anything *for* Him! He blesses me when He uses me for His purpose, but believe you me, it's Him...not me. I'm merely the tool in the Master's hands.

I can also identify with this. Although, I knew Jesus well as a child and there is no question in my mind that I was saved then. I saw wonderful answers to prayer and enjoyed intimacy with the Lord until becoming a grown-up got in the way. Then there was the work of returning to childhood in my faith and relationship with Jesus. Was I saved during that time? I believe so. Was I free or joyous in the Lord during that time? Definitely not. But I lose my freedom and joy in the Lord now when I am not mindful of Him and His presence.

Perhaps it's what John Piper talks about when he refers to asking the Lord to keep him saved everyday? I've listened to pastor Piper long enough to know that he doesn't believe you can lose your salvation.

But I agree with you. I could not speak to anyone else's position of salvation with the Lord. I do know of many in the church who have no idea God speaks to them. Many of us grew up learning to be afraid of hearing anything just in case it wasn't God.

Thanks for adding your personal perspective Cheryl.

I don't believe one can lose their salvation but the possibility of claiming to be saved and not is played out quite clearly on Judgment Day as described in Revelation.

On one hand I wish I was raised in the church because it might have staved off a lot of harm that I got involved in. On the other hand I am glad that I don't have the confusion that some have had on being raised Christian but not having a saving knowledge of Christ.

That's why in the end, the atonement is equally applied to all. We all have or shortcomings and consequences that need the Lord to cleanse and steward.
