ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected: Respect as Worship

I recall Susan H saying offense was a very effective tool of the enemy in North American churches. I would imagine a kind response would be an effective defense. In the context of worship I would think a kind response would make a good shield as well. I wish I was better at it.

I would totally agree with Susan, last year, rather frustrated, I told an acquaintence to get over themselves and their offense. It's like some sort of negative empowerment.
I wasn't very gracious about it so ... I was just as guilty. I was offended by their offense :).
I went on to say that Jesus could have been very offended at us placing our sin at His feet, on His cross and instead He bore the indignity and humiliation of it all. Instead of telling us all to pack a lunch and go straight to hell... He asked for the Father to forgive us for we knew not what we were doing.
Of all the people who deserved to be offended the most, Jesus chose to turn the other cheek and forgave the most.

Randy, you wondered in your blog if it will ever change. My own belief is that it won't. Not only has it become "entertainment" for people to flame one another, but I think modern life brings so many stresses that even the kindest and most patient people are finding it hard not to snarl at others. I agree with you that we should view Jesus as a our role model, but it sure is tough. Some days I fear I'm going to bite my tongue in half.
