ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected: Speaking of Halloween - Do You Participate?

Growing up my parents allowed us to trick-or-treat and I remember how much fun it was. Our neighborhood literally closes down as so many kids come. I'm not particularly sure it's my favorite time of the year, but it's fun and I don't begrudge kids the enjoyment I had.

My parents didn't allow us to go trick or treating for purely secular "there are crazy people" out there reasons. I did celebrate it for a while when I was out on my own but lost interest even before ever becoming a Christian. I am not against it and some of my friends kids are SO cute ... I just can't reconcile it personally.

Last year I attended the Castro District's infamous, massive street party - in a costume mocking Islamic suicide bombers. I even brought a real Koran.

Call it going back to an old "haunt" (pun intended), purging old memories, making new ones. Note well that there were far more costumes mocking Christianity (esp. Catholicism) than those mocking Islam.

So here's to a happy and fun and safe Halloween for everyone - but especially for kids.
